Nicholas Martin

Reader in European Intellectual History, University of Birmingham

Nicholas Martin is Reader in European Intellectual History and Director of the Graduate Centre for Europe at the University of Birmingham. He is General Editor of Forum for Modern Language Studies. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Oxford, where he was a Junior Research Fellow of Jesus College. From 1995 to 2004 he was Lecturer in German at the University of St Andrews.

He has published widely on German cultural and intellectual history, with a particular focus on the thought and legacies of Schiller, Nietzsche and Thomas Mann. His publications include Nietzsche and Schiller: Untimely Aesthetics (OUP 1996) and the edited volumes Schiller: National Poet – Poet of Nations (Rodopi 2006) and Nietzsche and the German Tradition (Lang 2003) as well as articles in Modern Language Review, Oxford German Studies, German Life and Letters, and Publications of the English Goethe Society. In 2005 he was guest editor of ‘Literary Reflections of Modern War’, a special issue of Forum for Modern Language Studies.
