Jill Suzanne Smith

Jill Suzanne Smith is an Assistant Professor of German at Bowdoin College. Her research and teaching within German Studies focus on gender & sexuality, nineteenth- and twentieth-century German Jewish studies, and the city of Berlin from the Wilhelmine era to the present. She has published articles on the conflation of white-collar working women and prostitutes in popular Weimar fiction, on the social hygiene film, and on configurations of space and gender in Curt Moreck’s Guide to ‘Naughty’ Berlin. She is currently finishing a book manuscript on literary, social, and cultural discourses on prostitution in Berlin, tentatively entitled Berlin Coquette: Prostitution, New Womanhood, and Desire in the German Capital, 1890-1933.
